I wish I could have kept you there…

I wish I could have kept you there
Where I left you
Under the bamboo trees.
Remember,
the bird droppings you tried to brush off me,
And the blue peacock calling so melancholically
Down by the stone banked stream?
I was so sad when that day ended.
When we had to leave.
I remember, we had dirty feet
From walking too much barefooted,
And dry mouths from all that talking (kissing).
The sun was low and red on the horizon,
And we had to say goodbye.
I wish I could have kept you there,
Where I left you,
Trapped in that memory.
But when I came back, everything had changed.
The bamboo trees had withered, and your bare feet
Were covered by black suede shoes.
