Don’t build a dam around it, let the rivers run wild and they will always find their way back to the ocean, a little wiser, a little more compassionate, after tenderly shaping mountains into valleys. Eventually it is the river that remains the same and the harsh rock that is forever altered.
Make your oddities, your eccentricities, your little imperfections your trademark, that which makes you stand out as a unique and interesting individual, someone who draws the world’s attention and reflects it right back in the form of light.
A rose is certainly beautiful, no one can deny that, but is it interesting ?
I say, give me a Snowdrop any day, forcing its little head up right through the frost, singlehandedly defeating King Winter himself. Or a Dandelion, shooting up through a crack in the black concrete, bedazzling the face of a rather colorless piece of earth, winning over gray-suited commuters and lighthearted children alike.
Sensitivity opens you up to creativity, empathy and imagination, but it also opens you up to a whole range of emotions that other people just don’t have the capacity to feel. Emotions are on high volume all the time. It can be extremely frustrating and cause feelings of anxiety, loneliness and depression. Connecting with other Highly Sensitive People can be a great comfort. But sometimes it is hard to be understood and taken seriously by other non-HSPs. Who of us haven’t heard the phrase: just pull yourself together, or: can’t you just control your emotions.
It is of vital importance that we all respect each other’s differences and listen to each other. Yes, we are all human, but what does that really mean? Humans are extremely complex beings, and that is, in my opinion, what makes us so interesting. Be open to this complexity, be willing learn and meet each individual with openness of heart and mind. Not everyone is like you, in fact, there is no one like you at all, and that is what makes you so uniquely interesting and important. And that is what makes each individual so uniquely interesting and important. It is time we start treating each other as such: as complex, beautiful and fascinating individuals.
